On October 12 and 13, 2011 Thames Valley Teacher Local, in partnership with the Thames Valley District School Board, conducted two days of training for Workplace Stewards and Principals. Each day approximately 140 participants attended a number of workshops that included the following topics: Cyber Safety, Report Card/Progress Report Card, Duties of a Teacher/Duties of an ECE, TPA/NTIP, Leave Language, CAS - Case Studies and Duty to Accommodate. All participants were provided with a lunch as well as a resource package for future use.

This Spring marked the third year of ETFO Thames Valley Teacher Local working to support the Right To Play movement in Thames Valley by hosting Right To Play Days. On June 10 and 17, approximately 300 grade 7 and grade 7/8 students from Davenport P.S., John P. Robarts P.S., John Wise P.S. and Algonquin P.S. participated in Right To Play activities at the Local.

On Thursday, June 2 the Thames Valley Teacher Local held the Annual Banquet at the London Convention Center. Over 400 friends, colleagues and family members were on hand to recognize and celebrate with the over 60 retirees. The Master of Ceremonies was Scott Naisbitt. Phillip Mack presented Derek Shadlock with the President’s Award in recognition of Derek’s many years of service to the Federation locally and provincially.

Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP) and Educators Financial Group (EFG) provided a free workshop and dinner for approximately 100 participants at the Local office on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Presentations from Robin MacDonald (OTIP) and Michael Spohn (EFG) included the following topics: Retirement Gratuities, RRSPs, Tax and Estate Planning, Investments, Retiree Health Insurance Benefits and Lifestyle Planning.

On Tuesday, May 3, ETFO Thames Valley Teacher Local hosted an information session regarding Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan - Understanding the Pension Plan and Dealing with the Pension Plan Shortfall. Jeff Holmes, Director, Pension and Economic Affairs, OTF shared an open discussion regarding the teachers’ pension plan and the implications of the potential early filing of valuation. The meeting was very informative. The event was attended by 86 members.

ETFO Thames Valley Teacher Local held the Local Annual Meeting on April 20, 2011. There were 223 members in attendance. The Proposed Operating Budget for 2011-2012 was presented by Kevin Durocher, Treasurer, and passed by the assembly. This was an election year and the Released Executive was re-elected by acclamation. On March 30, 2011 Thames Valley Teacher Local hosted a Retirement Planning Workshop. Participants enjoyed dinner and an informative presentation from Lorraine Stewart, Executive Assistant from ETFO Provincial. There were 140 participants in attendance. This workshop is offered twice a year and is recommended for all members that may be planning to retire in the next five years.

On March 24, 2011 Thames Valley Teacher Local hosted the annual 25 Year Celebration for members who have completed 25 years of teaching. The 93 people in attendance, made up of celebrants, their family members and colleagues, enjoyed the music of the Classique String Quartet and a fine meal catered by Chef Peter Lavoie. President, Phillip Mack, congratulated the teachers on their accomplishment and contributions to our profession and community. Speaking on behalf of the celebrants was Diane Dempsey.

On Tuesday, March 8, 2011 the Thames Valley Teacher Local held a New Member Event entitled The Mysteries of the Staffing and Transfer Process. There were approximately 30 participants in attendance and all participants were provided with a dinner and a resource package. This was an excellent opportunity for our New Members to engage in the complex process of staffing and there was an opportunity for all specific questions to be answered. Positive feedback was received and several ideas for future workshops were suggested.
