Become a Workplace Steward or Alternate

September 4, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

Have you ever been interested in getting more involved in the Local? Do you want to help strengthen your Union? Do you see yourself as someone who wants to make a difference in your profession?

If so, this is the perfect opportunity. We are reaching out to ensure that every school has elected Workplace Stewards and Alternates - and I want to take a moment to share why these roles are so important. Stewards are at the heart of how our Local connects with members; they attend meetings, bring back updates, and keep colleagues informed about union news, initiatives, and events. They are the bridge that ensures every member’s voice is heard and that we are all supported as part of the ETFO Thames Valley Teacher Local. This is your Union, and your participation makes our Union stronger.

The good news is, you are never on your own in this role. Training is provided, and ongoing support is always available from the Local Released Officers. Meetings are designed to be informative and manageable, with opportunities to share ideas, raise concerns, and network with colleagues. To make it easier, mileage and dependent care costs are covered - and yes, dinner is provided too.

Being a Steward or Alternate isn’t just about attending meetings. It’s about being part of something larger than yourself, contributing to a positive school and union culture, and supporting colleagues in meaningful ways. It’s also a great opportunity to learn more about the union, strengthen connections with colleagues, and take on a leadership role that makes a real difference.

Whether you are interested in serving as the Workplace Steward or stepping in as an Alternate, your involvement helps strengthen not only your school but our entire Local. I encourage you to consider putting your name forward - it’s a rewarding experience, and your colleagues will thank you for it.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

In solidarity,
Mike Thomas
President, ETFO Thames Valley Teacher Local
